Reasons to Love This Easy Taco Salad Recipe
- The tortilla bowls are fun to make and even more fun to eat. They turn a regular salad into an edible container.
- You can customize the fillings with your favorite taco toppings, from black beans to creamy avocado dressing.
- It’s a quick weeknight dinner. The bowls bake in just 14-16 minutes, so dinner is on the table fast.
Key Ingredients for Homemade Tortilla Bowls
- Burrito-size flour tortillas: They need to be large and pliable to form the bowl shape. Look for ones that are at least 10 inches in diameter. Avoid thin tortillas that may tear.
- Cooking spray: Helps the tortilla brown and crisp without sticking. Use a neutral oil spray like canola or avocado.
- Shredded cheddar cheese (optional): Adds a crispy, melty layer. Use a good melting cheese like cheddar or Monterey Jack.
Kitchen Tools for Making Tortilla Bowls
- Oven-safe bowls (such as small mixing bowls or ramekins) to shape the tortillas
- Two large baking sheets to hold the bowls
- Wire cooling rack for cooling the bowls after baking
- Cooking spray
Tips for Perfect Baked Tortilla Bowls
Press the tortilla gently into the greased bowl to avoid tearing. For even browning, place the bowls on two large baking sheets so they have room to crisp. If you want cheesy bowls, remove them from the oven 2-3 minutes before they’re done, sprinkle with shredded cheese, and finish baking until melted. Let the bowls cool in the bowls for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to stay crisp. This step is important, if you skip the wire rack, the bottoms can get soggy.
Taco Salad Bowl Variations to Try
The basic tortilla bowl is a blank canvas. For a cheesy version, sprinkle shredded cheddar on the bowls during the last few minutes of baking. To make it a full meal, add cooked shredded chicken, beef, or pork. You can also swap the creamy avocado dressing for salsa or sour cream if you prefer. The bowls themselves can be made without cheese for a lighter option.
Best Toppings and Sides for Taco Salad Bowls
Fill the tortilla bowls with your favorite taco salad fixings. We like lettuce, black beans, diced tomatoes, green onion, cilantro, shredded cheese, and creamy avocado dressing. For a heartier meal, add shredded chicken, beef, or pork. The bowls are sturdy enough to hold all the toppings without getting soggy if you fill them just before serving. Serve with extra avocado dressing on the side for dipping.
How to Store Leftover Tortilla Bowls
Store any leftover tortilla bowls in an airtight container or a Ziploc bag at room temperature. They will stay crisp for up to 2 days. Do not refrigerate, as moisture can make them soggy.
Taco Salad with Homemade Tortilla Bowls FAQs
Can I use corn tortillas instead of flour?
The recipe calls for burrito-size flour tortillas because they are large and pliable. Corn tortillas are smaller and more likely to crack when shaped into bowls. Stick with flour for best results.
What if I don’t have oven-safe bowls?
You can use any oven-safe bowl that is similar in size to a small mixing bowl. Alternatively, you can drape the tortillas over the back of a muffin tin to create smaller cups, but the baking time may vary.
How do I prevent the tortilla bowls from getting soggy?
Fill the bowls just before serving. Let them cool completely on a wire rack before storing. If you add wet toppings like salsa, drain them first.
Can I add cheese to the tortilla bowls?
Yes, sprinkle shredded cheese in the center of the bowls 2-3 minutes before they are done baking. Return to the oven to melt the cheese.
