Key Ingredients for Authentic Chicken Parmesan Baked Pasta
- Chicken: Use leftover, shredded rotisserie, or quickly cooked bite-size pieces. Shredded chicken gives the best distribution.
- Mozzarella and Parmesan: Freshly shredded mozzarella melts better than pre-shredded. Use good Parmesan for the topping.
- Panko bread crumbs: These give a lighter, crunchier topping than regular breadcrumbs. Toast them in butter and garlic for extra flavor.
Kitchen Tools for This Baked Pasta

- Colander for draining
- 9×13-inch baking dish
- Medium skillet for toasting panko
- Aluminum foil (sprayed with nonstick cooking spray) to cover while baking
Tips for Making the Best Chicken Parmesan Baked Pasta
For the chicken, use leftover or rotisserie chicken to keep this meal quick. Shredding it gives a better texture than cubes, it mixes into every bite. You can swap penne for ziti or farfalle if that’s what you have. The sauce can be homemade or a good jarred brand. To make ahead, assemble the dish completely, cover with foil, and refrigerate. Just add about 10 minutes to the baking time. Leftovers reheat beautifully, and this dish is great for delivering to a friend.
Expert Tips for Perfect Chicken Parmesan Baked Pasta
Cook the pasta just shy of al dente, it will continue cooking in the oven and you want it to hold its shape. When you make the panko topping, toast the breadcrumbs in butter with garlic until they smell nutty; this keeps them crunchy after baking. Covering the dish with foil sprayed with nonstick spray prevents the cheese from burning while the inside heats through. Remove the foil for the last few minutes to let the topping crisp up.
Rotisserie Chicken Shortcut for This Baked Pasta
Using a rotisserie chicken cuts prep time significantly. Pick up a pre-cooked chicken from the store, remove the meat, and shred or chop it. You’ll need about 2 cups, that’s roughly half a standard rotisserie chicken. This works just as well as leftover chicken and makes the recipe even faster.
Chicken Parmesan Baked Pasta Variations to Try
Switch up the pasta, try ziti, fusilli, or even whole wheat. For extra veggies, stir in a cup of chopped spinach or sautéed mushrooms before baking. To make it gluten-free, use your favorite gluten-free pasta and panko. If you like heat, add a pinch of red pepper flakes to the marinara. For a dairy-free version, substitute vegan mozzarella and Parmesan.
What to Serve with Chicken Parmesan Baked Pasta
Serve this baked pasta with warm garlic bread to soak up the extra marinara. A simple green salad with a tangy vinaigrette balances the richness. Sprinkle fresh basil on top just before serving for a pop of color and flavor.
How to Store Leftover Chicken Parmesan Baked Pasta
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. The flavors meld together even more the next day.
Best Ways to Reheat Chicken Parmesan Baked Pasta
Reheat individual portions in the microwave for about 2 minutes. For a larger amount, cover the dish with foil and warm in a 350°F oven until heated through, about 15-20 minutes. The panko topping will crisp up again if you uncover it for the last few minutes.
